The Effects of Vehicle Velocity and Engine Mount Stiffness on Ride Comfort

For the improvement of ride quality, development of vibration damping control systems and isolating methods become more important. To define basic ride vibrational modes, the effects of vehicle velocity and wheelbase on the standard road surfaces should be investigated. The different vibrational responses depending on the measurement positions of a vehicle body are presented with the bounce and the pitch motions. A methodology for the isolation of engine mount system's resonance to the road input and periodical excitations of tire/wheel nonuniformity forces are discussed. Using the computer simulation and the experimental results, a useful ride model with respect to the vehicle velocity and the stiffness of engine mount is presented.

A Study on the Transient Characteristics of Automatic Transmission with Detailed Dynamic Modeling

Transient characteristics during gear ratio change including the disturbance of output torque have been important issues in the study of passenger car automatic transmission. In this paper, to investigate the transient characteristics during gear ratio change, a detailed dynamic model of the power transmission system of a passenger car focused on the automatic transmission was proposed and the governing dynamic equations were derived and solved. The results of simulation showed good agreements with the experimental data. It was proved that the suggested dynamic model is very useful to analyze the phenomena occurred during the speed ratio change.

This report explains the basic theory of designing the accelerating durability test road and the role of each factors contributing to the test road surface profile. Also this road is designed by considering the charactors of vehicle suspension system and conditions of driving. In test road, the factors affecting to the vehicle structural durability are correlation among surface shape of road profile, frequency of vehicle suspension system,distribution of axle twist angle and vibration of road profile height. Road PSD magnitude and frequency delay is used to control these factors relation.

Flame Propagation and Knock Detection Using an Optical Fiber Technique in a Spark-Ignition Engine

In this research, an optical system for the detection of the flame propagation under the non-knocking and knocking conditions is developed and applied to a mass produced four cylinder SI engine. The normal flames are measured and analyzed under the steady state operating conditions at various engine speeds. For knocking cycles, the flame front propagations before and after knock occurrence are simultaneously taken with cylinder pressure data. In non-knocking and knocking cycles, flame propagation shows cycle-by-cycle variations, which are quite severe especially in the knocking cycles. The normal flame propagations are analyzed at various engine speeds, and show that the flame front on the exhaust valve side becomes faster as the engine speed increases. According to the statistical analysis, knock occurence location and flame propagation process after knock can be categorized into five different types.

Optimization of the Crashworthiness of a Passenger Car Using Iterative Simulations

The paper describes an engineering project carried out to optimize the crashworthiness of an existing passenger car for frontal crash using a procedure relying on numerical simulation. An optimization target is defined in terms of an ideal acceleration pulse at the seats anchors. The acceleration time history and structural members are scanned in parallel to correlate the local acceleration peaks to specific structural members. Members details are iteratively modified in order to alter the accelerations and get closer to the target.

Elasto-Plastic Deformation of a Tied-Down Passenger Car Body

Tie down loading effect on the car body has been analyzed for various factors. Excessive force during transportation causes local failure or dent of a car body. In order to prevent local failure and to increase the tie down strength effectively, nonlinear finite element analysis was performed considering large deformation, rotation and elasto-plastic deformation. Location of dent was predicted which was the same as reported and it was found that there are two ways to increase the tie down strength: one is the application of the tie down load at the side of fuel inlet and the other is the reinforcement of rear floor side member. This paper demonstrates the displacement and the stress distributions for various locations and directions of tie down loading and the degrees of reinforcement of rear floor side member.

Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Hyundai Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV)

Recently, flexible fuel vehicle (FFV) has been drawn great attention because of its response for immediate use as alternative fueled one. Hyundai FFV can be operated on arbitrary fuel mixtures between gasoline and M85 with the specially programmed electronic control unit (ECU) which can determine optimized fueling quantity and ignition timing as the methanol content by the signal from electrostatic type fuel sensor. In this paper, the results of various tests including engine performance, cold startability, durability and exhaust emission reduction have been described. Full load, cold mode durability tests and field trials have been carried out with some material changes and surface treatments in the lubricating parts and fuel system. But, more work on its durability improvement is still required.

Research and Development of Hyundai Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFVs)

This paper describes Hyundai's research and development work on a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV). The work on FFV has been conducted to evaluate its potential as an alternative to the conventional gasoline vehicle. Hyundai FFV described here can operate on M85, gasoline, or any of their combinations, in which the methanol concentration is measured by an electrostatic type fuel sensor. For that operation, a special FFV ECU has been developed and incorporated in the FFV. The characteristics affecting FFV operation, such as FFV ECU control strategy and injector flow rate, have been investigated and optimized by experiment. Various development tests have been performed in view of engine performance, durability, cold startability, and exhaust emissions reduction. The exhaust gas aftertreatment system being consisted of manifold type catalytic converter(MCC) and secondary air injection system has shown good emission reduction performance including formaldehyde emission.

A Predicting and Improvement of Side Impact Using the CC-CTP

Extensive researches are being performed on a world wide basis with the aim of enhancing occupant protection on the side impact. The test methodology for side impact can be divided into two general groups; Sub-System Tests Full Scale Tests. However, the advantages of full scale test is that it is possible to make an integrated statement on the protective potential of the structural stiffness of the struck vehicle and the padding for a selected collision speed and type of collision. The advantages of sub-system test methodology can be simulates more exactly for wide range of accident(i.e. collision directions, impact points etc.). The latter test procedure can be carried out at a relatively earlier stage in the development of a new vehicle, and also can be reduce the time and cost. The Computer Controlled Composite Test Procedure(CC-CTP) presented in this paper has been developed by CCMC (Committee of Common Market Automobile Constructors).

Identification of the Relation Between Crank Shaft Bending and Interior Noise of A/T Vehicle in Idle State

This paper shows the cause and the solution to the uncommon noise which happens ½ order component of engine rpm when a vehicle with automatic transmission has an air conditioning load and “drive” range load on the engine. By measuring cylinder pressure, main bearing cap vibration, engine mount vibration, and interior noise simultaneously, the cause of the noise can be proved by analyzing and comparing the data. The cause of the uncommon noise is bending vibration of the crank shaft. To solve the problem, one can change the crank shaft dynamics by reducing the mass of the damper pulley.

The Design and Development of the Hyundai Alpha Engine

Main design features and some of the development work carried out on the first new engines to be produced in-house by Hyundai Motor Co. are described. The Alpha family of multi-valve, four cylinder engines comprises 1.3 and 1.5L naturally aspirated units and a 1.5L turbocharged version. Modern features are incorporated in the engines in order to provide higher performance and good fuel economy with excellent durability at reasonable cost. Hyundai Motor Co. (HMC) was established in 1967 and, in the following year, commenced production of passenger cars for the domestic market, using CKD components supplied by Ford of Europe. In 1974 the Pony saloon car entered production; this used mainly locally produced components but most of the major items, including the power train - engine and gearbox - were manufactured under the license from Mitsubishi Motors.
